Made cooperatively by groups of artisans, these shallow rugged bowl-shaped baskets are formed with coils of sweet grass wound with raffia, fibers from the palm tree. Both beautiful and practical, each intricately designed pattern is one of a kind and makes a good choice for use on your table or on display. They may be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
This style of bowl basket is from Rubona, a village in Western Uganda. These tribes like to use all-natural dyes extracted from local plants which yield a product in earth tones. Their bundles of fibers are smaller than those from Kampala, and their designs are intricate patterns resulting in a finely woven basket.
